Quaint, full of history, and having a rainbow of colorful building sprawling throughout the city, it was easily love at first sight with Olomouc, Czech Republic. I left a week after my study abroad program in Germany completely devoid of plans, hoping that I was going to meet some awesome people to travel around with. Or, I was hoping to learn about a new place for a solo visit. Either way, I was approaching the end of my program and feeling fancy free.

I ended up making plans with Michael (name changed) from my program and found myself back in Prague with him for 5 days. Wanting to get out of the city, I contacted my dear friend Nikki for her suggestion of a day trip. Come to find out, one of her most favorite towns in Eastern Europe just happened to be a 2-hour train ride away: Olomouc. I excitedly invited Michael to accompany me for a spontaneous day trip, only to find myself setting off on my own: he still had some places in Prague he wanted to check (Czech?) out. No big deal. I wanted to go and wasn’t about to change my plans for him!

With my scant list of places to see, things to eat, and pictures to take, I set off from Praha hlavní nádraží with a $19USD round trip ticket to a new destination in Olomouc. When I arrived at the Olomouc station, it hit me that I probably should have looked at a map or something before I arrived. Or taken the time to learn a few key words in Czech, like “north” or “train” or “bathroom.” Oops. Not letting a language barrier stand in my way, I looked around and found a city map like I did when visiting Auschwitz, took a picture, and then headed off in search of adventure. What I found transported me back to a simpler time, where Baroque was king and cobblestones were en vogue. See for yourself and ask if you need to book at trip to Olomouc…

High atop the Church of Saint Maurice, a sweeping view is worth the climb up the double-helix staircases. Whenever I travel someplace new, I try to view it from a higher vantage point.

Prague isn’t the only city in the Czech Republic that boasts an astrological clock!

  1. I’ve never been to Olomouc before, but it really has that old town feel that I love. The astrological clock is very cool, and a nice feature in the city. The birds eye view from above are stunning and capture the splendour of the city. Definitely one to add to the list!

  2. I have been to Prague but never to Olomouc before. From your photos it does resembles Prague but it looks more quiet and peaceful, perfect to walk around and explore it without the crowds. I also like to go up towers and find beautiful birds eye views of the cities I am visiting.

    1. It does feel like you’re still in the Czech Republic, but minus all the crowds of Prague. And there are tons of places you can catch a bird’s eye view!

  3. Wow, what a beautiful city. I never heard of Olomouc before but love going to the less popular places. Fewer tourists and more authenticity which is what it looks like you got. Those colorful buildings are amazing. My kind of place to visit. I hope Michael feels like he got left out, cause you can visit Prague anytime 🙂

  4. Apart from Prague, I haven’t visited any other Czech city, but I heard they are extremely picturesque places! Your article proved all those rumours right! We share the same affinity: take pics from higher vantage points 😊😊 I try to do it everywhere I go… Those are the most beautiful scenes, as you take in everything that place has to offer! Safe travels!

  5. Your experience of the city was so much different to mine. When I went in 2012 I had such bad experience that I won’t mention what happened here. I’d rather concentrate on the positive. You’ve actually given me hope in revisiting one day. Thanks for that 🙂

  6. I’ve been to Czech Republic but never heard of Olomouc before! Looks pretty nice, as does Prague, but lesser crowded and touristy obviously because it’s not as popular. Interesting reading about a place I’ve never heard, thanks for this info 🙂

  7. I have been to Czech Republic a few times but not to Olomouc. It looks like such a pretty place though and I could easily see myself getting lost in the village exploring. I especially love the colourful old square with the UNESCO site the Holy Trinity Column.

  8. I only visited Prague in Czech Republic but I think I’ll love Olomouc as well. This city looks quite similar to Prague, as it has an astrological clock with cute colorful houses. Those alleys look really lovely. I’d love to wander around the city, enjoy the atmosphere and get lost.

  9. I think the colourful houses have something with it. They make us love the places better . Recently I had been in Vanuatu and could see everything. Painted in bright colours like containers , house roofs, gates etc. it is so lovely in the natural back drops that you immediately fall in love with the place . Olomouc is no exception I guess 🙂
